Former Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau is the leading contender to be named Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Garneau is considered to be the best man to work with his U.S. counterpart Rex Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil. Tillerson, 64, was nominated by President-Elect Donald Trump and is widely expected to be confirmed.
Garneau, 67, who is currently Canada’s transport minister, lived in Houston for nine years and knows well the U.S. political system.
A retired military officer and engineer, he was the first Canadian in space, making three flights aboard NASA Space shuttles in 1984, 1996 and 2000. He was the president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2006.
