Protecting his flock
The pastor and many of the parishioners bring their guns to Sunday services at the Lighthouse Mexico Church of God in the upstate New York town of Mexico.
A sign outside the Oswego County church declares that the church is not a gun-free zone, and you can take that as gospel.
The pastor Ron Russell says his church is like a family, and it’s his responsibility to ensure their safety.
“Pastors are commissioned by God to protect their sheep,” Russell said.
And he does just that — by packing a loaded gun.
And so do many of his flock.
Russell has encouraged his parishioners to bring their guns to church since 2013 when an evil young man walked into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed nine people.
The people who attend Lighthouse Church don’t want to end up like those innocent souls, or like the 26 who were gunned down by a madman in the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, on November 15 of last year.
