Marine Le Pen has high praise for ‘visionary’ leaders Putin and Trump
“A new world has emerged in the past years,” Le Pen said after meeting Putin. “This is Vladimir Putin’s world and Donald Trump’s world.”
MOSCOW, March 24, 2017
Vladimir Putin and Marine Le Pen sat down together in a surprise meeting in the Kremlin on Friday, a tête-à-tête that will stir up European anxiety about Russian support for the far right in this year’s elections.
“We do not want to influence events in any way,” Putin said, “but we retain the right to meet with all the different political forces, just like our European and American partners do.”
Speaking after their meeting, Le Pen said Putin represented “a sovereign nation” and a “new vision.”
Le Pen was invited to Moscow for meetings in the Russian parliament and was not expected to get together with Putin, but when the parliamentary meetings ended she appeared inside the Kremlin.
Russia is supporting Le Pen in the upcoming French election, just as it backed Trump. Le Pen, like Trump, has frequently expressed admiration for Putin.
Her Front National party has taken loans from Russia, as it has from other foreign banks, to finance her campaign. French financial institutions refuse to fund presidential campaigns.
If elected president, Len Pen said she would remove the sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union.
She called on Russia and France to work together to save the world from “globalisation and Islamic fundamentalism.”
